Twenty-one+ tools for a 21st Century Education

Description: “What’s out there on the web to support 21st century education? How can I engage my students?” Come discover some wonderful interactive sites for the K-6 classroom and see how you can use these with your students in math, science, language arts, social studies, and more!
Intended Audience: Grades K-6 Computer-using Educators

1. Math
a.E-manipulatives - choose your grade
b. Connecting cubes, counters-choose on the e-manipulatives site for your grade
c. Online money-Choose COINS and BILLS and use workmat to make amounts 2 ways-see word handouts on handout page that go with this activity
d. Geoboards-Click "List activities" on the right to see a list of activitites available. They also have activities for older grades
e. Create-a-Graph
f. Google Earth for measurement and direction-download free, use TOOLS menu and Measure to measure in different units
g.Virtual manipulatives-National Library of Virtual Manipulatives-find your grade and topic and enjoy!
h. Interactivate-Some excellent online activities here-a bit more difficult

2. Science
a. Foss Web-choose your grade, each topic has online activity, web sites, ask and expert and more
b. Let's Talk About Insects-online in English and Spanish-interactive and has quiz and activity at end-make own bug and post online
c. BBC Science clips-choose an age, these activites have audio instructions and a quiz for assessment

3. Language Arts
a. Online Stories-Try links 1, 5, and 7 to see stories read online with text highlighting
b. BBC Language Activities-Making Words-Whirly Word-use teacher control panel to choose which vowels you want to use and what level to try. You can choose other activities on the left with similar controls
c. AOL School-Word Builder-choose sounds you want to use to build words-audio
d. Audacity-free recording software to record students responses, export in wav or mp3 format
e. Read Please-Copy and paste text or type text and it will read it.
f. GCAST-Record audio by phone to post to web-easy podcasting

4. Social Studies
a. Google Earth Placemarks -after downloading this free program, watch this webcast to learn how to create a placemark tour (password for webcast is "discovery"-students could watch and learn as well
b. Scholastic News Current events or online content reading-scroll down, choose your grade level and CONTENT AREA READING
c. Ben's Guide to Government

5. Other
a. Gaggle student e-mail, filtered, text reader can read e-mails-school must sign up, free with advertising
b. Scrapblog-online scrapbook with comments, must have e-mail to sign up, could sign up teacher and let each child have a scrapbook or use gaggle e-mail accounts for each student-one warning, anyone can create a scrapblog so having students view other scrapblogs not created by your class may or may not be a good idea. c. Podcasts-use GCAST-record audio by phone to post to web, or record on free program like Audacity
d. Education Place (lots of ideas here)
e. AOL Jr-pick a topic and you will find lots for K-2
f. BBC pick a subject
g. Internet 4 Classrooms-Skill Builders-this is Kindergarten but just click the arrow by Kindergarten to move to another grade

6. Projects:
a. Kidpix make 10, 100 days-use Kidpix stamps to have students show different ways to make ten or to make 100
b. Chicka Chicka-could read book or show United Streaming video and then do this activity in Kidpix. If you do not have Kidpix, could do a similar activity using a free download of Tux Paint. More Ideas including Chicka Here
